That’s the beginning of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, which proves in the superb revival that opened on Broadway Wednesday night, that it is still one of the greatest of all American plays.

The bottom line is that the show we all hoped would set Broadway on its ear, simply pats it on its back, providing us with generic pastiche comedy and timidly tepid satire.
